Edinburgh is choc full of amazing pubs and restaurants to enjoy food and drink, but there are none quite like Cafe Royal. Just a stone’s throw away from Waverley station, this beautiful old stone building is a venue full of character and a perfect night-out to add to your stack.

Where can I find quirky bars in Edinburgh?

Just a short walk from Princes Street, this delightful old building houses one of the most unique bar settings in Edinburgh.

Cafe Royal is fairly hidden despite its proximity to the more touristy part of Edinburgh city centre, located on a street corner among the cobbles of St.Andrew’s square. Entering the restaurant, you’ll immediately be able to admire the six ceramic tile portraits of famous historical innovators including one of the founding forefathers of America Benjamin Franklin. The murals stand in the shadow of the charming Victorian-style chandeliers, while large, stained glass windows with spectacular artwork of Scotsmen enjoying various sports are dotted around the building. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it a great place to round off your day out in Edinburgh. You can relax with their cask ales or on-tap beers, or enjoy something from their great selection of seafood, meats and traditional Scottish meals.

  • Group bookings for the restaurant should be booked in advance.
  • Under 18’s can’t drink in the bar, but may still dine in the restaurant.
  • Because of the old building style, there are unfortunately no special access toilets.
