What is significant about the Sugar Loaf Islands and Paritutu rock?

Paritutu and the Sugar Loaf Islands are the remnants of a huge volcano that was active almost two million years ago!

The Sugar Loaf Islands, found off the coast of New Plymouth, are the eroded stumps of what used to be an ancient volcanic crater. Above the surface of the water, you can spot 7 islands and multiple reefs. Underneath the water’s surface, there are magnificent cliffs, canyons, boulder reefs and sand expanses! The waters that surround the islands are home to at least 90 species of fish, over 30 species of sea sponge and multiple other species of sea organisms, making it a great area to try and spot some wildlife!

Standing guard on the eastern end of New Plymouth’s harbour is Paritutu Rock, which is also another volcanic remnant! There is a walking track that leads you to the top beginning on the northern side. Although it may be a struggle to make it to the top, the views are spectacular and definitely worth the climb, as they overlook the entire New Plymouth coastline, city, port and Sugar Loaf Islands!
