How do I get to Te Waikoropupu Springs?

Te Waikoropupu Springs can be found approximately 7km from Takaka by following State Highway 60 North from Tanaka and turning left just past the Taka River. From here Follow the Pupu Valley and Te Waikoropupu Springs Road until you reach the car park.

Te Waikoropupū Springs boasts the title of being the biggest freshwater spring in the country and the largest cold water spring in the world!

The short loop trail around the springs takes you through the forest towards a platform that sits over the crystal clear water of the springs.

The springs discharge over 14,000 litres of water per second, making the waterways very dangerous for those who decide to get too close to the water. Because of this, and the quality of the water, it is forbidden to go into the water for any reason.

For those who wish to extend their walk, there is a slightly longer loop that takes roughly 15 minutes more to complete by returning via Fish Creek for a beautiful display of mosses, ferns and other flora species beneath the forest canopy!

  • The springs, including Fish Creek and Springs River, are closed to all forms of contact between humans and the water (no swimming, diving, boating)
  • Please be careful if visiting with children as the spring’s waterways are fast and dangerous
  • Perfect for photo opportunities
  • Dogs welcome aslong as they do not go in the water
