What is the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail?

The cycle trail is made up of nine sections, linking the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, and is suitable for all ages!

The Cycle Trail kicks off at the base of Mt Cook, or alternatively at Tekapo, with both routes joining up on the shores of Lake Pukaki. From the lake, the trail goes via Twizel and the shores of Lake Ohau before ascending to the trail’s highest point where visitors will get to witness the beauty of the Mackenzie basin before heading down towards Omarama. The Waitaki Valley provides a variety of geographical wonders, visitors will venture past more lakes and rivers, traverse through vineyards and take in the ever-changing vistas on the way towards the Pacific coast.  The final destination is the town of Oamaru, known for its popular ‘Oamaru Stone’ Victorian buildings, art galleries and Blue Penguins!

It is recommended that visitors take 5-7 days to cycle the entirety of the trail and don’t forget to add extra time to explore the region while you are there.  Alternatively, if time is of the essence, why not make a day excursion or explore a section or two over a couple of days!  There is no better way to reconnect with old friends and family or even just get away from it all! Whichever option visitors decide to choose, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is guaranteed to be a fantastic experience and provide memories that will last a lifetime!
