Go underground at Real Mary’s Kings Close

If you’re looking for a unique experience in Edinburgh, or if you’re a history buff and want to find out more about life in 17th century Edinburgh, then we’ve got a great activity to add to your stack. Head underground to one of the oldest preserved (and supposedly the most haunted too!) areas in the UK and discover the dark truth behind the Old Town of Edinburgh.

Where can I learn about Edinburgh's history?

Just a ten-minute walk from the famous Edinburgh castle, head down below to Marys Kings Close and experience centuries' worth of history.

The Close has been frozen in time thanks to its preservation efforts – shrouded in myths and mysteries, the alleyways and homes hold the stories of those who were unlucky enough to inhabit it. The tour at The Close is brought to life with faithful impersonations of the characters who made the site famous, like the Plague Doctor George Ray who, during the second outbreak of the Plague, was renowned for his work in medical sciences, and of course, Mary King, whose extraordinary life led to the naming of the site. The site was even visited by famous Japanese psychic Aiko Gibo in the making of a film about the most haunted places in the UK.

  • The tour lasts one hour and runs every 15 mins from the hour
  • Private tours are available, at £295
  • Adult, student and senior tickets are £18.95, while children (5-15 years old) are £12.45 (5-15). Family tickets (2 adults + 2 children) go for £54.
  • They can be contacted by email at this page: https://www.realmarykingsclose.com/contact/
