Are you looking to get a closer look at some of New Zealand’s incredible scenery and wildlife? Well, then Grótta is a brilliant place for that as it has some amazingly beautiful sights and is home to some wonderful animals so make sure you pack your camera!

Why go to Grótta?

It is one of the most visited sites in the Reykjavik area, offering visitors a unique environment for walking, biking or bird watching. If the sky is clear and the solar activity is high, you can also see the Northern lights from here!

Grótta is a land-tied island at the end of the town of Seltjarnarnes in Iceland, home to the stunning Grótta Lighthouse. During low tide, the path between the island and the mainland (known as the tombolo) is revealed, like magic! This beautiful island became a nature reserve in 1974, with approximately 450 couples of artic terms nesting on Grótta so keep an eye out for the local wildlife during your visit. The shining star of this little island is its lighthouse, originally built in 1897 (with a new one being built in 1947). It was named after one of it’s dedicated lighthouse keepers, Albert Þorvarðarson. Come and uncover this hidden gem!
