Want to visit somewhere truly special? Believed to be the home of St Cuthbert, the Island of Lindisfarne is a place of worship, tranquillity, and jaw-dropping views. Located south of Berwick Upon Tweed, this bite-sized island features pubs, cafes, and even a castle! If you’re planning a visit to Holy Island, make sure to check for safe crossing times, as the tide rises and completely separates the island from the rest of the country twice a day. Unless you can part the sea, it is best to wait for low tide before approaching the island!

How can I get to Holy Island?

The Island is linked to the mainland by a road that is quickly cut off twice a day by fast-rising tides. It is vital to check crossing times before crossing as you may get stuck otherwise!

Holy Island remains a place of pilgrimage to this day and is the final destination of the long-distance walking route and one of Scotland’s most famous trails, the St Cuthbert’s Way. Cruise across the sea to the island and you will find the Lindisfarne Priory, a 12th-century epicentre of Christianity in Anglo Saxon times.

Perched on the top of the rocks that overlook the island is Lindisfarne Castle. The Castle has been a post for soldiers to defend and keep an eye on the horizon for trouble since around 1570. The Castle is now looked after by the National Trust so visitors can visit and enjoy the gorgeous architecture and views the area has to offer.
