Originally, the castle was built as a plantation castle. This meant that it was set up by a local Gaelic Clan to help defend against the attempted plantations of that land by the British. It was later captured by Oliver Cromwell. Nowadays, visitors can take tours of both the castle and gardens. Although, part of the castle is still lived in by some of the original builders!
