Where can I ride steam trains in North England?

One of the most breathtaking and complete steam train journeys in the UK is on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway - enjoy fantastic views of Yorkshires finest countryside and relax with one of their famous dining experiences. You'll find Bolton Abbey Station via the A59 towards Harrogate, following the signs.

The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway originally formed part of the Midland Railway’s route from Skipton to Ilkley – it opened in 1888 and operated until 1965 when it was closed. 14 years later, in 1979, a group of volunteers worked to reopen the line as a preservation and heritage route, where it was refurbished and opened in 1981.

On your journey on the award-winning Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, you’ll be taking a nostalgic trip into a bygone era – you’ll hear the majestic hissing sound of the steam engines and glamourous locomotives that have been lovingly and expertly restored by a committed team of volunteers. The carriages include Victorian Director’s Saloons and vintage Edwardian carriages (the oldest of which dates back to 1908!) which you’ll hop on board from the stunningly re-built Victorian Embsay station.

Although the route is only five miles long, you’ll get some of the finest views the Yorkshire Dales has to offer! Make sure to stop off en route at Holywell Halt, a fantastic place to stop for a picnic, watch the trains go by and snap some incredible pictures, and enjoy a relaxing walk to Abbey Ruins and Bolton Abbey estate just over only a mile away.

Make your journey even more special with one of their fantastic dining experiences! There’s a mouth-watering range of events to choose from, where you can enjoy delicious meals from the comfort of your luxurious Victorian carriage. Combine your trip with a classic afternoon tea set, a filling roast dinner at the Carvery Express, the essential fish and chips experience or spice it up a little with the famous Curry Express. Look out for their calendar of exciting special events too, including the nostalgic 1940’s weekend and a dose of mayhem at the Taste of Faulty Towers!
