Limavady and the Roe Valley in County Londonderry

 

Head to the town of Limavady and learn about the town history, adventurous scenery and some strange local characters. There may also be some border collies. This town was founded in the early seventeenth century and the name ‘Limavady’ is of Gaelic origin and means ‘Leap of the dog’. Over the years Roe Valley has became an irresistible attraction.

If you love walking then you will enjoy a walk along the River Roe, you will admire the ornamental lake and will view the ducks as they swim along. The trees in the distance marks the course of the river Roe and you will be able to see what is left of the old beetling mill. While you walk you will head across the mill race where the forest floor is covered in a carpet of bluebells. Further ahead you will spot an old weir where the salmon migrate upriver, the old weirs can be a lively place where you will view fish leaping high as the sky.

Head to the Roe Valley Country Park and enjoy the amazing view as you walk on footpaths beside the river crossing bridges and admiring the view. Listen to the noisy cows and admire the beautiful wildflowers you will not be disappointed. The rivers are rich with tout and salmon and the wildlife is varied, you may see foxes, badgers, otters and even kingfish. Visiting the old powerhouse or the restored old weaving shed is worth the visit. You will enjoy viewing the collection of old machinery which produced linin as well as various old items.
