With stunning scenery, the Highlands of Scotland make the perfect location for your next adventure. With magical mountains, beautiful beaches, historic castles, and fascinating history, there is so much to do and explore in the Highlands. Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and with a population of 75,000, it is the most northerly city in Scotland.
In more turbulent times, the 1746 Jacobite Rebellion came to a brutal end at the Culloden Battlefield. The site is 5 miles from Inverness. You can experience, the battle up-close, at the visitor centre’s 360-degree immersion theatre. The Highlands are served by a number of award-winning museums including Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, Historylinks in Dornoch, Timespan in Helmsdale, and the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore.
On both the East Coast and West Coast, the Highlands are home to a number of amazing castles. Two of the most famous are Dunrobin Castle in Golspie on the East Coast and Eilean Donan Castle at the Kyle of Lochalsh on the West.
Stretching for almost 23 miles and reaching depths of over 650 ft, Loch Ness extends southwest of Inverness. Loch Ness forms part of the Caledonian Canal, which connects the east coast of Scotland at Inverness with the west coast at Corpach near Fort William. The town is a gateway to the West of Scotland and Ben Nevis, the UK’s tallest mountain is nearby. If your looking for one of the World’s best indoor ice climbing walls head to Kinlochleven, 21 miles from Fort William. For a spectacular journey, the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig takes in some amazing scenery including the Glenfinnan Viaduct.
On the Orkney Islands, you will discover one of Europe’s most important Unesco World Heritage sites. Explore Orkney’s Neolithic sites including Skara Brae, a village settlement over 5,000 years old. The Isle of Skye features some of the most dramatic landscapes and is renowned for its natural beauty and wildlife. Explore fishing villages, word-class dining experiences or enjoy a wide number of outdoor pursuits. Fans of the finest malt whisky should head to Islay.
Explore the great outdoors – some of the best adventure opportunities exist in the Scottish Highlands. Ziplining in the Cairngorms across the ancient Caledonian forest, master some epic mountain bike trails, or check out some great watersport action. Golf fans are served by some of the top links courses, including the Championship Course at the Royal Dornoch Golf Club – voted one of the best in the World. According to records golf was first played in Dornoch in 1616.
