Cave Tours in Laugarvatn

Inject some adventure into your sightseeing with a caving expedition! The team at Laugarvatn Adventure will guide you through these incredible volcanic tunnels and help you get to grips with caving if you’ve never tried it before.

Where can I go caving in South Iceland?

Laugarvatn, situated right in the middle fo the Golden Circle between Þingvellir National Park and the Geysir Geothermal Area, is home to an amazing network of lava caves which you can explore with the help of expert guides from Laugarvatn Adventure.

The different caving expeditions on offer at Laugarvatn Adventure are as follows:

Gjábakkahellir; a tunnel formed 9000 years ago by flowing lava and filled with beautiful rock formations, is a perfect cave for beginners, with large chambers that allow you to explore underground without any claustrophobic tight spaces. These tunnels are rocky however so a bit of scrambling will be involved.

Litli-björn – Vörðuhellir is slightly more challenging. The longest lava cave in the Þingvellir national park at over 550 meters long, which was once thought to be two caves until a connecting tunnel was discovered. On this adventure, you’ll explore these amazing caves and crawl through the lava tunnel adjoining them.

Their last caving adventure is more high stakes, with a portion of your journey including abseiling 13 metres down a hole to access the cave below and exiting via a rope ladder. You can also challenge yourself with some rock climbing on the upper level of the cave if you feel up it. Tintron cave is thought to have been created by a pressure bubble that burst in the past, leaving a huge hole underground. Over the years the cooled lava rock has come away to reveal colours and formations underneath.

Based in the village of Laugarvatn, Laugarvatn Adventure also offers paddle boarding and skiing tours. Their Paddleboarding and spa tour includes a visit to Fontana spa after your session on lake Laugarvatn. They offer 2-day skiing trips on-demand in the Icelandic Highlands.
