This is the world’s first Beluga Whale Sanctuary! The Sea Life Trust is a registered charity (no. 1175859) working globally to protect the world’s oceans and the amazing marine life that lives within them. The aims of our sanctuary are to provide a more natural life for the belugas in their care, to advance knowledge through research and education and to support the protection of belugas in the wild. By leading the way and demonstrating an alternative way of caring for these beautiful animals they want to encourage others to consider sanctuaries as a viable alternative. This change could potentially transform the lives of not only beluga whales but over 3,000 other whales and dolphins currently housed in traditional captive facilities or performing in shows around the world.
Planning a trip to Iceland? Be sure to visit the Visitor Centre or take a boat trip to learn more about the residents of the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary! Sea Life Trust is also Iceland´s only Puffin Rescue Centre. It features a native species aquarium and amazing educational displays about the beluga whales and the sanctuary. The sea sanctuary is located in nearby Klettsvik Bay, a short boat trip away from our Visitor Centre. Seasonally, they will run carefully managed boat trips to visit the bay, which allow you to view the belugas home from a discreet distance.
Visiting hours are Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:00, and Sunday 13:00 to 16:00.
