12 things to do in Co. Westmeath

Calling all history lovers! Of course, Ireland as a country is full to the brim of different activities that history lovers can enjoy. However, Co Westmeath is one of the best examples of somewhere off the beaten track!

Visitors can explore purpose-built facilities that explore the county’s history, like the famous Dun Na Si Amenity and Heritage Park, which showcases the unique nature of Celtic art and culture.

Although, some of the most interesting sites in the county are nestled away in the countryside that dominates the scenery of the area. Why not take a trip to the famous Hill of Uisneach, where the Gaelic Kings of Ireland are said to have met once a year!

If castles are your thing, then don’t worry, Westmeath has an abundance of them to choose from. Why not take a trip to Tullynally Castle and Gardens, where you can take in the site that the Packenham family once owned.

Of course, like the rest of the country, Westmeath has a huge amount of ancient ruins for visitors to explore. Like the famous Fore Abbey, where you can witness how an ancient Benedictine Monastery worked.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, and if cycling is your thing then make sure to visit the Old Rail Trail. Where you can cycle along the once used Midland Great Western Railway Track.

There is something for everyone in Westmeath, so why not take a trip down, with the county town of Mullingar being easily accessible via public transport links from Dublin!
