Calling all history lovers! Are you looking for something fascinating to do on your next day off? Well then, look no further than The Black Abbey in Kilkenny City. This fantastic structure has an important history, being central to life in the city for hundreds of years. Founded by Dominican monks and established as a friary in 1225. Back then it was considered a peaceful and tranquil spot, as it lay just outside the walls of this famous city.

Where can I find The Black Abbey?

The church is located in Kilkenny city centre, located across the River Nore in the Irishtown area. The church is located near other tourist destinations like Kilkenny Castle and St Canice's Cathedral and Round Tower.

The castle was extremely important for the city and remained an ecclesiastical and commercial centre up until the 1500s. From then, King Henry confiscated it and converted it into a courthouse, from there it fell into ruin. Although thankfully, it was restored in the 1800s and reopened for worship. Visitors can feast their eyes on some of the beautiful features inside, which includes the only surviving statue of St Dominic in Ireland. So, what are you waiting for? If this sounds like an interesting day out to you, make sure to visit The Black Abbey in Kilkenny City!
