The Old Rail Trail In Westmeath

This cycling and walking trail is 4okm is in length, from the main towns of Mullingar and Athlone. The trail follows part of the old Midland Great Western Railway companies line from Dublin to Galway.

Where can I find the Old Rail Trail in Mullingar?

The track can be accessed via the Royal Canal Greenway in the Newbury end of the town. It can also be accessed close to the Forrest Park Industrial estate, and parking is available near this site.

This line is steeped in history, having originally opened in the 1850s, and, unfortunately, seized all passenger trains on the line in the late 80s and 90s. It laid in ruin for many years until recently being converted into a fully functional cycle track, alongside the original train line, which covers most of the county. Visitors can see some amazing countryside along the way, but, also see some of the original stations and railway paraphernalia. There are multiple bike rental companies across the county.
