What is the Govett-Brewster/Len Lye Centre?

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is New Zealand's contemporary art museum and also the home to the Len Lye Centre, which is New Zealand’s first institution dedicated to an individual artist, filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye.

Founded on the dream of local-born Monica Brewster and her vision to have a contemporary art museum in her city, the gallery works with artists and ideas to help get people engaged and build communities through contemporary art!

To this day the gallery continues to develop its 50-year legacy of presenting meaningful and cutting edge art, from local, national and international artists, that celebrates and explores who they are as well as the people of New Plymouth, their city, their communities and cultures, and their histories and understanding of the world. The exhibitions at the gallery change out every four months so there is always something new for everyone to experience.

The newest wing of the Govett-Brewster, the Len Lye Centre, showcases the New Zealand-born artist, Len Lye’s ideas and artworks in film, sculpture, painting and photography. It also shows work by artists whose practice is related to Len Lye’s.
