Relive The Hobbit with the Waitomo Tour

If you’re a fan of The Hobbit and happen to be planning a trip to New Zealand, then we have an activity for your stack that can’t be missed! Relive movie magic as you follow in the footsteps of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the dwarves on the Hairy Feet Waitomo Tour of Denize Bluffs farm.

Where was the Hobbit filmed?

One of the principle filming locations for the Hobbit was Denzie Bluffs farm, not far from Waitomo Caves. This beautiful farm site offers tours of what would become Trollshaw, showing you all the iconic locations from the blockbuster film. The farm is a 15 minute drive from Piopio village, or 45 minutes from Waitomo village.

Home to towering limestone cliffs, a lush, primeval native forest and stunning rock formations, it’s no wonder that Peter Jackson chose this location, featuring the most screen time in the whole film! The tour is led by Warrick and Suzie, a friendly couple and the third generation owners of the Mangaotaki Valley property. You’ll be given a warm welcome to the farm, and from there you can immerse yourself in this beautiful New Zealand forest and the heart of where Bilbo’s unexpected journey was brought to life. Discover the abandoned farmhouse, home to the iconic scene where Bilbo and the Dwarves were nearly cooked by Trolls! Experience first-hand where the Orcs planned their assault on Throin and company, and the cave where Gandalf bestowed the magical sword Sting upon Bilbo. Along the way, your guides will tell funny stories and interesting anecdotes around the filming process.

Hobbit fan or not, this tour is the perfect way to experience one of New Zealand’s most stunning locations!
