What can I do at Te Ana Ngāi Tahu Māori Rock Art Centre?

At the Māori Rock Art Centre, guests can discover the original art galleries of Aotearoa, the Māori rock art sites found in the Aoraki region.

At the Māori Rock Art Centre, visitors are welcome to join the local Ngāi Tahu guides, some of which are descendants of the people that originally created these pieces of art, on a tour filled with discovery through the culture and history of the Māori people at Te Ana, their unique, immersive cultural centre. The centre takes pride in being the guardian of one of the most significant collections of Māori rock art in the whole of New Zealand. The collection includes eight tribal treasures cut from sites over a hundred years ago, and now reunited with their home and their people.  Take a step back through time and relive the journeys of the Māori ancestors, and explore the practice of rock drawing! Guests can make their own rock art, hold an ancient moa bone, and shelter from Pouakai the giant eagle in the cave of the Taniwha!

The centre also offers tours of ancient Māori rock art sites, in which guests can explore Aotearoa/New Zealand’s first-ever art galleries, where traumatic and inspiring images were painted on the walls and ceilings of limestone caves by the Māori people several hundreds of years ago. Walk in their footsteps, listen to their stories, and fully immerse yourself in the local Ngāi Tahu culture.
