Where can I fly falcons in North England?

Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre is your answer, offering a range of exciting experiences, where you can see and interact with some of the worlds most incredible birds of prey, from hawk walking experiences to family friendly days. The centre is a 14 minute drive west of Carlisle city centre via the B5307.

Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre is run from Thurstonfield, not far from Carlisle, sitting in the Solway basin, which itself is already home to a fantastic variety of wildlife including Britain’s endangered red squirrels, roe deer, woodpeckers and a range of other birds and mammals.

There’s a course or activity for everyone at the centre. If you’re taking the kids on a weekend day trip, then the family experiences are designed especially with this in mind – the activities are centred on making sure your child experiences as much as possible, giving them access to all of the centres birds and providing the family with their own fun, all in a stunning countryside location that will have everyone refreshed. If you’re looking for something different to do with your other half, then the couple’s experience is perfect for you, with an hour to explore the centre in a guided tour and interact with all of the birds.

If you’re more keen on the wise, elegant looking owls, then you can have a more in-depth experience centred on their owls, including barn owls, African-spotted owls and more. For those who truly want to dive into the world of falconry, then there is a two-day falconry break that will give you a fascinating insight into keeping these incredible birds of prey, or take a five day course that will train you on how to properly keep a falcon, train it and fly it free among a range of other instructions. Or, if you just want a taste of falconry in one-day, then the hawk walks make for an ideal experience, where you will be given one of the centres spectacular Harris Hawks and carry it with you into the local woodland and watch it fly from your hand and back for rewards.

While each activity is designed for the participants, if you want to bring some friends or family along and they’d rather not take part, then they can come as spectators to watch the experience.
