Visit St. Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay

Built-in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, St Mary’s Lighthouse remained in operation until 1984. Ever since the lighthouse and former keepers’ cottages have operated as a unique visitor centre.

Reached via a short causeway, this picturesque lighthouse is surrounded by an amazing nature reserve containing rockpools, clifftops and a beach. Keep your eyes peeled for seals, who often come ashore to digest food!

Climb the 137 steep steps, right the way to the very top! Marvel at the most magnificent views of the North East Coast that there are. Also, enjoy the fascinating exhibits explaining the lighthouse’s history and gain insight into the local wildlife.

As the lighthouse is located on an island, opening times change daily depending on the tide. They are open 7-days a week, weather permitting.
