Archers at the ready! Step back into the past and resurrect history by visiting Newcastle Castle today! Steeped in history, this imposing Norman fortress is a rugged reminder of northern England’s turbulent past. Newcastle Castle is where the story of Newcastle began and the reason it got its name. A defensive fortification throughout medieval times, this was no baron’s stately home. The Castle was a grim symbol of royal authority, where armies gathered, and criminals were imprisoned and executed. With its prominent position overlooking the city’s iconic Quayside, the site was occupied for nearly 2000 years. The area is naturally defensible with steep sides overlooking and running down to the River Tyne. Today, it is still iconic; part of the city’s lifeblood. Visit the family-friendly historic attraction to walk in the steps of the people who lived and died in the shadow of Newcastle Castle. The most commanding views across the city and the River Tyne. The quintessential view of Newcastle and Gateshead.
