Whether you’re a die-hard train lover, or just casually interested, you’re sure to absolutely love everything the Whitehead Railway Museum has to offer! Whitehead is only a small town, but it has a huge railway history. Featuring five fascinating galleries, the museum combines traditional displays with new multimedia and interactive displays. It’s sure to be an interesting and engaging experience learning all about the history of the steam train in Ireland.

The museum is full of restored trains and carriages that you can go inside. Get up close and personal with a 140-year-old steam engine! Or climb on board a 1950s carriage! You can visit the engineering workshops, the dining carriages and even the controls of a steam train. However on Saturdays, perhaps the highlight, you can actually take a short, 10-minute ride on board a real steam train!

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, of course! There is plenty on offer to keep kids engaged; there is even a children's play area where they can dress up in Edwardian-style clothes and pretend they are train drivers for a day!

Explore the museum in your own time, aided by extremely friendly and knowledgeable guides. If you bring your smartphone and headphones, you can enjoy a prerecorded audio tour! Platform 3 Cafe offers a wide range of food and drinks in a unique historical setting; an old Victorian tea room!

The Whitehead Railway Museum is open Thursday to Saturday from 10:00 to 2:30. You must book tickets online in advance. It’s recommended you give yourself 1 to 2 hours to fully enjoy the experience.
