Stargazing at the University of St Andrews Observatory

Open nights for star gazing are regularly run by the student organised astronomy group with smaller telescopes for guests to observe the night sky will also be provided if the sky is clear. Specialist guided tours are also available by request day or night for educational or sightseeing groups.

Where is the St Andrews University Observatory?

The observatory is located a few minutes walk from the centre of town just off off Buchanan Gardens and easily accessible from the B939 road from St Andrews towards Strathkinness. There are a few parking spaces available directly at the observatory.

Home of the James Gregory Telescope, the observatory project was started up in 1940, bringing astronomy back to St Andrews after hundreds of years. Now, as the outpost of astronomy group of the School of Physics & Astronomy in St Andrews, the observatory is responsible for capturing amazing images of outer space and sharing the love of the cosmos with others through their outreach program.
