Take a guided lamplit tour around one of the most remarkable systems of man-made caves in the UK at the Chislehurst Caves right underneath London! This amazing labyrinth of tunnels spans over 6 hectares of maze lying 30 metres beneath the woodland and homes on the surface. Learn all about its fascinating history and even experience it through the different sets depicting what life was like in the caves at different points in history. There’s even a part of the tour where they’ll simulate what it was like for people sheltering in the caves during an air raid, with the sounds of bombs going off in the pitch darkness. As one of the most unique places to visit in London, this is an activity well worth adding to your stack!

Where can I find unique historic tours in London?

The Chislehurst Caves run a fantastic historic tour just outside London.

Whilst Victorian tour guides once told the public tall tales about the lives of druids in the caves, filled with murder and suspense, their actual origins are much more practical with the cave being originally dug out to mine chalk for bricks while London was being built. The caves have been used as Woolwich Arsenal munition storage in 1914, mushroom farms in the 1920s and 30s, and even as a bomb shelter to over 15000 people during the Blitz.

The Caves are also home to some amazing art from the 60s and 90s including Sandy Brown’s stunning druid-inspired carving with modern twists to make sure it’s never mistaken for real historical evidence.
