Ready to step back into the past? Head on down to the English village of Cranmore, near Shepton Mallet, Somerset to experience the magic of steam trains!

Where can I find the East Somerset Railway Station?

The East Somerset Railway is located in the village of Cranmore, just off the A361. It’s about 3 miles from Shepton Mallet and 6 miles from Frome.

Visit the engine shed and workshop to see restoration in progress by our skilled bunch of volunteers, or ride the train yourself to see it in action! The train journey is approximately a 5-mile round trip, which takes 35 minutes total. The good news is that your ticket allows you to ride as many times as you’d like!

There’s also a newly refurbished museum, waiting room, signal box, miniature railway, and a ticket office to see! There is also the David Shepherd Discovery Centre on-site that delves into the history of this fascinating railway, as well as the story of David Shepard himself – the hugely popular wildlife artist who helped cultivate the railway.

Once you’ve toured the railway, there’s a shop full of gifts and memorabilia to buy, as well as the Whistlestop Café where you can have a seat with a hot drink and a slice of cake. Afternoon Tea is also available on the Mendip Belle coach sometimes, which they recommend booking ahead for as it’s very popular!
