If you’re looking for a relaxing way to explore the spectacular scenery of the Snowdonia national park (that doesn’t involve climbing or zip-wiring!), then look no further as we’ve got the perfect activity to add to your stack. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a steam train journey on the Bala Lake Railway, a 9-mile journey through the stunning sights of Snowdonia.
This 9-mile journey through Snowdonia will ride alongside the largest body of water in Wales, Bala Lake that’s home to many local Welsh legends and folklore, as well as its charming surrounding countryside areas. You’ll be relaxing in the shadow of the Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy mountains with great opportunities for spotting wildlife like herons and buzzards that often nest in the trees next to the train line. Your roundtrip journey will start and end at Llanuwchllyn, with a cafe to relax with a coffee and a snack and a heritage centre to find out more about the local area.
A short walk away is Bala Town, where you can enjoy browsing their shops or relaxing on the shores of the lake (you can go for a dip if you’re feeling up for getting wet!), with the Bryn Hynod woodlands nearby to go for a stroll and a picnic. The Railway often hosts special events throughout the year, including BBQ events during the summer months and mince pie specials during the Christmas season.
