Discover Ancient Secrets at National Showcaves of Wales

Did you know that some of the world’s most incredible rock formations are right on your doorstep? Hidden among the beautiful rolling hills of the Brecon Beacons National Park is a spectacular network of caverns waiting to be explored, so what are you waiting for – climb down into the National Showcaves Centre in Powys to discover the 315 million-year-old twisting passageways and caverns.

What can I do indoors in Powys?

Head down to the National Showcaves of Wales to explore some of the country's most stunning natural formations.

Your ticket into the caves will give you access to all 10 attractions on offer, with plenty of activities for all ages. There are 3 different caves to be explored, each with a special character. Walk through the beautifully lit passageways of Dan-yr-Ogof and admire the magnificent formations discovered over 100 years ago; be amazed at the thousands of ‘straw’ stalactites and 40-feet high waterfalls that decorate the enormous passageways of Cathedral Cave; uncover the 3000-year old artefacts of the Bone Cave, including 42 human skeletons and Roman pottery and a fascinating exhibit that illustrate how our ancestors struggled to survive alongside wolves and bears!

You can also go face-to-face with one of the world’s largest collections of life-size dinosaur models, with over 220 dinosaurs from millions of years ago including the giant tyrannosaurus rex. For something a little more relaxing, go and visit the Shire Horse Centre to make friends with some gentle giants, and a playground area for the kids with itchy feet. The history buffs aren’t forgotten about, with a faithful reconstruction of an iron age village. You’re bound to be tired after your visit, so cap off your day at the café or bring something home to remember your visit from the gift shop.
