What can I do in Powys?

One of the must-do activities in Powys is to visit Powis Castle and Gardens. You'll find the National Trust site along the main road to Newtown (A483), following the brown signs and entering by first drive gate on right. The closest station is Alight at Welshpool, 1 mile away.

Powis castle was built over 800 years ago in 1200 as a medieval fortress, by the Welsh prince of the Powys kingdom, to establish independence from the northern Welsh kingdoms. The castle changed ownership over the centuries, once possessed by Anne Parr (the sister of Catherine Parr, and sixth wife of Henry VIII!), until the castle was handed over to the National Trust in 1952.

The castle has mostly been occupied by the Herbert family, who were major figures in the British East India Company, who amassed a massive collection of objects during the violent siege of power in India and Myanmar, and brought the collection back to the castle at the beginning of the 19th century. This collection is the largest of its kind in the UK, where you’ll see ivories, statues of Hindu gods, ornamental silver and gold, ceremonial armour and weapons among other things. You will also discover incredible works of art from paintings to sculptures, textiles to elaborate furniture all from different parts of the globe. The museum is a fantastic way to see the painful legacies of British colonialism that have remained until today.

The gardens are some of the most exquisite in the UK, a paradise of colours and spectacular plantlife that are steeped in 300 years of history. Marvel at the magical mix of terraces, spectacular topiary (maintained by gardeners who take to the air 14 metres high each year!) and dancing statues. From the explosive colours of the spring and summer blooms, to the stunning autumn shades and glows or and crisp winter air, the garden is an amazing place to visit al throughout the year.
