Visit the opulent Lumley Castle, now a hotel, where you can stay and is supposedly slightly haunted – don’t worry we’ll get to that but first let’s talk history. Lumley Castle has dominated the County Durham landscape for over 630 years. Back in the early 14th-century this Elizabethan castle was inhabited full time. Since 2010 the castle has accepted guests and business has been booming ever since.

Lumley Castle is also supposedly haunted by 14th-century lady of the manor, Lily Lumley, who was reportedly murdered by two priests after refusing to convert to Catholicism. The rumours of the haunting are so well known that Lumley Castle has actually capitalised on it by having an escape room on site that is based on her called “Lily of Lumley” – a truly immersive and thrilling Escape experience.
