Looking for a different type of museum experience? At Peterhead, they have converted an old prison into a museum. The prison was built around 1888 and was open until 2013. While you explore the prison you will have a headset that will inform you of the history of the prison. As you walk around the prison there will be information boards so you can get a chance to read about the lives that lived here.

Where is Peterhead prison museum?

Right alongside Peterhead bay near the harbour.

You will get a chance to see the prison as how it was left before it closed, and you will get a first-hand experience of how the prisoners lived by visiting the cells, Halls, kitchen, laundry room, barbershop and shower block. Once you have seen where and how the prisoners lived you can head out to see the yard where they would get their daily exercise and also visit the hospital. The museum also holds a murder mystery event twice a year, on the 30th of October and the 13th of February.
