St Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower in Kilkenny City

Arguably, one of the most interesting sites in the city is St. Canice’s Cathedral. The site dates back to the 6th century and is where the city takes its name from, Cill Channigh being the old Irish for the church of Canice. One of the main attractions at the site, is the Round Tower, being one of only two Round Towers in Ireland that visitors can climb up. The cathedral has beautiful historic art, carvings and stained glass that keep the glamourous cathedral an attraction and relevant to this day!

The Cathedral and Round Tower are located in the Irishtown area of the city of Kilkenny, not far from the River Nore and the Black Abbey.

The church has been a vibrant centre for celebration and ceremonies in the city since its inception. Nowadays, visitors can attend the Kilkenny Arts Festival which uses the acoustics of the building to provide a unique experience for visitors who often attend from around the world. The site is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. The tower climb is open from 12pm and 3pm, Monday to Saturday. So, what are you waiting for?
