Afternoon tea is a quintessentially British tradition and has its origins in 1840 England, introduced by the seventh Duchess of Bedford. Dinner at her household was often served late in the evening at 8 pm, a long time to wait after lunch at 12 am. Because of this, she would become very hungry, so she asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter is brought to her during the later hours of the afternoon. This became a habit between her and her friends, and soon spread across the country as a popular social event!
