Where can I find the Waingongoro River Dam?

The old 5.5-metre hydroelectric dam can be found on the Waingongoro River near Normanby.

Dam dropping, or white-water sledging as it is also known, has become one of New Zealand’s many quirky adventure sports, and it all started right here in Taranaki! Put your nose to the water as you navigate and race your sledge headfirst over a short steep dam on the Waingongoro River!

Kaitiaki Adventures often runs trips to the dam on demand, leaving from the Normanby Hotel. It is recommended to bring a swimsuit and towel, don’t worry about other equipment as a padded wet suit, booties, life jacket, helmet, fins, and a sledge similar to a small surfboard are provided for you. The guides add a cultural element by talking about the kaitiake, who are the traditional guardians of the land and its rivers.
