Stretch your legs and journey along the award-winning promenade that runs along the New Plymouth Coastline! For a relaxing walk with stunning views of the Taranaki coast, this is a must-add activity to add to your stack!

Why should I walk along The Coastal Walkway?

The New Plymouth Coastal Walkway is ideal for running, walking, cycling or skating and boasts beautiful views with numerous access points dotted along the way!

Starting off at Hickford Park, walkers can venture through scenic farmland past the Waipu Lagoons and toward the coastline to walk alongside the New Plymouth Golf Club before reaching the Te Rewa Rewa Reserve! Once crossing the magnificent Te Rewa Rewa bridge that frames Mt Taranaki, walkers will head on to the Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park and visit the surf beaches at Fitzroy and East End.

When approaching the central section of the walkway, walkers will be able to see New Plymouth District’s iconic Len Lye Wind Wand, some interesting stone carvings and other pieces of public art or access to the central buisness district – which is home to the award-winning heritage and information centre Puke Ariki and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery!

Continuing to head West will lead walkers to the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre, Kawaroa Park and playground and then finishing off at the marina at the Port and Ngamotu Beach – which is a popular safe swimming beach for all ages!

  • Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash
  • Cyclists must wear helmets
  • Mobility scooters are available for use from the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre
