Visit Carterton Railway Museum in Wellington

Are you interested in trains, seriously or casually? Then the Carterton Railway Museum is the perfect one for you! The museum is located in the Carterton Railway Station precinct. The precinct houses railway memorabilia of the type used throughout the Wairarapa since the building of the Wairarapa railway line in the 1870s and 1880s. There are also items from the community. The Society’s aim is two-fold: to restore the historic station building built in 1880 to its former glory and to develop the precinct to include facilities for steam and diesel-powered trains and restored railcars. The society works with other groups with similar interest to achieve its aims.

Are there any events held at the Carterton Railway Museum?

Yes! There are various events held at the museum throughout the year, including a carnival and a Carterton to Masterton Return Trip Steam Train Ride! Simply check out their website to find out more.

A member of the museum will personally show you around the artefacts. There are some old wagons and small diesel shunting locomotive in the railway yard. There is a good view of these wagons from the station platform. The Station Displays feature many photographs, artifacts used by railway staff over the years and a display by the Carterton and District Historical Society. It also has some items for railway signalling, including an operating electric tablet system. This operated in New Zealand for 96 years and ceased operation on July 4, 1994. This was the last operating tablet between Featherston and Woodville. There is also a working model of a steam engine! The Yard and Workshop features six wagons, the oldest built in 1910, the historic Waingawa Station building, the historic Clareville Station building, the society’s locomotive TR724 and a one six-person motor trolley, currently under restoration.
