If you’re in York, make sure you take the time to drop by the fascinating and unique place that is Holgate Windmill; it really is a captivating relic of the past. Holgate Windmill is York’s last surviving windmill. In fact, it’s the oldest 5-sailed windmill in the entire country! For all York’s other attractions, this is a real highlight. It is unique and it is now fully restored for an amazing visitor experience.

What does Holgate Windmill actually do?

The windmill is one of the last places in Britain producing traditional stone-ground flour. In fact, you can buy some of this unique floor yourself while you’re there!

The windmill tower is massive; it’s approximately 45 feet high and it has a had a long history. The first 36 feet of the tower is built from Georgian bricks and then the final 9 feet is built with Victorian bricks. This is just one sign of the tower’s history. It’s truly a fascinating adventure for both adults and kids alike. There’s a volunteer on every floor to tell you all about the windmill’s history. They’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have! Make sure you buy some of the traditional stone-ground flour that the windmill produces. Why not bake a cake or bread! The mill shop is open for flour sales every Saturday morning between 10 and 12.
