Visit Rothe House & Garden in Kilkenny

Located in the heart of Kilkenny City and situated at the mid point of the Medieval Mile is one of Irelands true hidden gems: Rothe House & Garden. The property on a burgage plot is the only one of its type open to the public in Ireland. It was once the home of wealthy merchant and politician John Rothe Fitzpiers. He built the three-house complex for his wife Rose Archer and their eleven children between 1594 and 1610. You are invited to wander and explore at your leisure; view the magnificent architecture, step through cobbled courtyards and take in the relaxed atmosphere of our extensive garden. It’s all waiting for you.

What are the opening times?

The house and gardens are open six days a week, from Tuesday through to Sunday. It is open from 10:30 to 16:00. Unfortunately it is closed on Mondays.

The garden at Rothe House is a faithful recreation of the Rothe family garden. Our gardeners restored it as it would have appeared in the early 17th century. Rothe House garden is now the only urban garden of this period which is open to the public. The long, walled burgage plot runs from the rear of John Rothe’s mansion on Parliament Street to the city wall. Archaeological excavations in 2008 uncovered the original layout of the garden. Even the seeds and pollen of the plants of the 17th century were discovered.
