What is at the Mokau Museum & Gallery?

The Mokau Museum & Gallery was established by the Tainui Historical Society to display the collection of artefacts that are related to the Tainui area.

The purpose of the museum & gallery is to collect, preserve, document, research, display and otherwise make available local natural history and cultural heritage relating to the region. This area is focused within the four tunnels of Waikawau, north of Mokau, Awakino, northeast of Mokau, Okau to the east and Mt Messenger in the south.

The collection at the museum consists of roughly 3000 artefacts including taonga, social history and natural history. An abundance of photographs and archives make up the rest of the collection in the museum. These photographs show events, features and people of the region, although there are also maps and newspaper articles that help add another dimension to the collection. Genealogical material allows locals to freely research their history which brings a personal touch to many with ties to the region.
