Where can I visit a monastery in Ireland?

Since the island has a rich history of monasteries and friaries, there are many ruins left for visitors to explore. One of the most interesting is Oakvale Monastery in Co Laois.

The site is one of the most historical in Ireland, playing a key role in the country’s early Christian period. Unfortunately, the bulk of the area was destroyed by Vikings, however, there are still some elements left for visitors to see! The site was recently proven to be an ecclesiastical centre of learning, and has a strong association with the book of Leinster! So, ancient history lovers, if this sounds like an interesting day out for you, then make sure to visit Oakvale Monastery on your next day off!
