Considered to be what brought St. Patrick to Armagh, the Navan Fort (or Email Macha as it’s known in Irish) is one of the most famous sites in Ireland, with archaeological evidence dating back to 95BC. The site is steeped in folklore. Legend says that Macha, the ancient goddess of war, scored the earth, tracing the outline of this sacred stronghold. Visit the amazing exhibitions for a detailed overview of the site’s long history, both true and mythical.

The Navan centre is so much more than a museum, however. It is an immersive, interactive experience. Raise history from the dead and meet the Celts as they go about their daily lives. Put your ancient chef’s hat on and cook like a Celt using a fire pit. Or paint your face and let out a bloodcurdling battle cry as you learn how to use a sling or hold a spear. There’s plenty to do and learn on offer. Kids can even dress up in Celtic costumes and become archaeologists for the day, digging in the archeo-pit to uncover bones and coins!
