Visit Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre in Waikato

The award-winning Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre is New Zealand’s only Speleological Museum containing everything you need to know about caves, cave creatures, and the history of caving in New Zealand. Not only are the displays cave themed – you can also crawl, climb and squeeze through the “cave crawl”, cracks and squeezes throughout the Discovery Centre. The Discovery Centre houses the taonga of the local iwi for safe keeping, as well as a nationally significant collection of fossils and sub-fossils, and New Zealand’s only Speleological Library.

Where is the centre located?

The Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre is situated on Waitomo Village Road (SH37) (Please note prior to December 2013 this section of road in the village was named “Waitomo Caves Road”), 8 kilometres from the Highway 3 turn-off and right in the middle of the Waitomo Caves Village. Just look for the green and white i-SITE signs.

The Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre is operated by the charitable Waitomo Caves Museum Society and encourages visitors to come and explore the region’s wonders, offering both tourism and historic information. It’s a one-stop shop for booking attractions and cave tours, as well as a base for finding accommodation. The Centre is dedicated to preserving the area and its heritage for future generations, and teaching visitors about the magnificent caves they are enjoying.
