Where can I find the Harwoods Hole Track?

When coming from State Highway 60, near the top of Taka Hill, follow along an 11km sideroad to the Canaan Carpark. Here you will find a campsite, toilets, water and a signpost for the track.

Starting off from the Canaan Carpark, a 45-minute long walking trail leads you through a magnificent beech forest complete with beautiful limestone rock foundations bordering the track.

Along the trail, you will come across a choice of paths to follow! The trail on the right will take you towards the gorgeous Gorge Creek Lookout, which comes equipped with incredible views of the Takaha Valley and Gorge Creek. Take care on the way to the lookout as the track takes you onto sharp limestone rock formations!

The trail on the left will take you towards the deepest vertical hole in the whole of New Zealand! The hole is 176 metres deep and drops to an underground river that runs into Gorge Creek before linking with the Takaka River.

Please remember that it is incredibly dangerous to get close to the edge of the hole as there are no barriers. It is not possible to see down the hole so please enjoy it from a safe distance!

  • Do not go near the edge of the hole
  • No dogs allowed
  • Appropriate footwear is essential to traverse the sharp rock formations
  • Remember to be careful and not try to traverse any risky paths
