Are you looking for a historic place that can do it all? Winton Castle is a patch of the Scottish countryside, less than half an hour away from Edinburgh, partly made up of farmland and woodland, with the mighty castle lying at the heart of the estate. The castle’s history dates all the way back to 1480 when it was commissioned to be built by George, 4th Lord Seton. Since then, it has passed through the ownership of many different families and royal figures, as well as been destroyed and restored multiple times!

Where can I do outdoor activities near Edinburgh?

Head to Winton Castle for a wide range of exciting outdoor activities, set on a stunning countryside estate! You can find the castle about half an hour's drive east of Edinburgh via the A1, or take the 113 bus from the city centre, stopping at St. Andrew's house and walking for 15 minutes.

The estate has a wide range of exciting activities on offer – try your hand at clay pigeon shooting, where you’ll take aim with 24-time Scottish clay shooting champion Billy Gordon. Traverse through different terrains in thrilling 4×4 driving experience and quad biking, travelling through their fantastic woodland course near the castle – this is a great opportunity to test your driving skills and get your adrenaline pumping! The castle hosts the classic highland mini-games, involving up to 300 participants! It includes all the classics such as caber and hay tossing, tug of war, highland dancing and many more traditional activities!

If you want to learn something new, then why not take up the ancient art of Bushcraft? Or, if you want to compete with your friends, then Winton Laser Tag is an immersive experience with multiple game scenarios to enjoy. If you want to make a weekend out of your activities, then there are plenty of accommodation options at the castle – the castle’s historic rooms can sleep up to 16 people, and there are 34 more spaces in their luxury self-catering country houses.
