Relax at Whitmore Bay in Barry Island

Just a short journey away from Wales’ capital Cardiff is one of Britain’s treasures – golden sands await at Whitmore Bay, a perfect getaway or day out with family or friends. The answer for beach holidays doesn’t always lie on a flight to Spain!

Where is Whitmore Bay?

Whitmore Bay is easily accessible, a 30-minute drive from Cardiff via Cardiff Rd/A4055, or take the train from Cardiff Central Station directly to Barry Island which runs every 30 minutes followed by a 6-minute walk to the bay.

Located on the southern tip of Wales, this beautiful beach is one of the go-to options for local swimmers and sunbathers alike, with its golden sands among the finest Britain has to offer, maintained by the National Trust… There’s a reason this beach was the setting for many scenes in the famous series Gavin and Stacey! The beach is flanked by a sweeping promenade with everything you’ll need for your trip: delicious restaurants and cafes, fish and chips and not forgetting the essential stop for ice cream. The kids won’t be getting bored with plenty of entertainment and activities for the family, including arcades, a climbing wall, crazy golf and more. There are 24 beach huts available for hire offering fantastic views of the bay, providing groups with a comfortable base for the day to store their things and get changed.

  • There is a wheelchair for hire that covers all terrain, email [email protected] or phone them at 01446 704867 or 07713 389519
  • There is a lifeguard service at the beach.
  • The huts are open in summer from 10 am to 8 pm, and in winter from 10 am to 6 pm (with no half-day bookings).
  • There are plenty of car parking options with most charging £5 for all day.
