If you would like to take part in the jet boat and rail cart tours, then the Rail and River Run option is perfect for you! Lasting roughly 7 hours, the Rail and River Run tour includes the best of both worlds, encountering up to 10 tunnels and 20 bridges as you travel over 40km by rail and 23km by boat on the Whanganui River, providing a mixture of nostalgia and adrenaline!
Not to worry if you aren’t interested in the boat trip, as there are 3 other options of rail cart tours to choose from!
The ‘Tokirima 10’ tour is an incredible rail cart experience that takes you through 10 tunnels, including the longest 1.5km tunnel! This option is great for families with younger kids. Local guide, lunch, and a visit to Lauren’s Lavender Farm and shuttle are included.
Another option for the rail cart tours is the ‘Republic 20’ Tour, which consists of a full-day rail cart experience that includes the Tangarakau Gorge and the historical town of Whangamomona. Lunch, snacks and return shuttle are included.
Finally, there is the ‘Ultimate’ rail cart tour. This includes a 2-day rail cart tour from Taumarunui to Stratford and can also be done in reverse. All 24 tunnels and the entirety of the railway line are covered in this tour. Lunch and snacks, overnight dinner and bed and breakfast are included in this option.
