Go Stargazing at OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory in Omagh

OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. It is an International Dark Sky Park, where astronomy meets archaeology. Most of us live under ‘sky-glow’, a sky which is illuminated by artificial light, known as light pollution. But not here! A lack of light pollution at Davagh Forest means the night sky is at its darkest, and at its best to really see the stars! Here you will experience unrivalled and wondrous views of the night sky, one of only 78 places around the globe with official International Dark Sky accreditation and the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland. Enjoy the wonders of the universe, and the fantastic exhibition and make sure you check out the exciting film projection on the outside of the Observatory building. Go on a unique journey through time and space today!

Do you need to have your own telescope to enjoy it?

No, not at all! There are many things you can observe throughout the year, and admittedly some you may need a telescope or binoculars for. However, others you can enjoy with your naked eye. Also, there are ‘Go-To’ and ‘Point-To’ mini-telescopes available as part of the exhibition visit, for a hands-on experience of looking at the sky and the landscape.

Check the astronomical calendar on their website to see what’s interesting and upcoming. Some amazing things you can do and see incredibly clearly are Moon Gazing, the Northern Lights, the Milky Way, Planets in our Solar System, Meteor Showers, Deep Sky Objects, Star Clusters, Galaxies and Nebula. OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory is home to a 14-inch LX600 Meade telescope. While you can see the telescope as part of your visit to the exhibition, it is only ever operated by a technical expert during special star-gazing events or during an organised group tour. See the Meade in action, projecting images of the night sky onto screens in the exhibition area. Star hop across the universe on one of their daily guided tours. Their interactive exhibition links the landscape with the astronomical and archaeological heritage of the Sperrins, featuring holographic installations and virtual reality headsets.

You can visit Davagh Forest International Dark Sky Park at any time of the night to star gaze. During the Summer season, the OM building closes at 7 pm,  but visitors will still be able to access the forest and car park.
