Visit Gear Homestead from Bad Taste (1987) in Porirua

Gear Homestead ‘Okowai’ is a historic building in Porirua, New Zealand. It was listed by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category 2 historic place in 1983. Gear Homestead is significant because of its association with James Gear, a butcher who founded the Gear Meat Preserving and Freezing Company. The company was one of the largest employers in Wellington and also played a large part in the development of Petone.

Why might I recognise Gear Homestead?

You might recognise Gear Homestead from the 1987 cult classic Bad Taste. It was Peter Jackson’s debut feature film which was shot in the area over the course of four years. The road to The Lord of the Rings started here!

Gear Homestead is now a lovely restaurant known as Gear Eatery & Bar. Make sure you try one of their famous scones or coffees! Eat in or take out; the choice is yours! Enjoy the summer weather from the brand new, purpose-built deck, and enjoy all the classics done well, along with the best in coffee, craft beer, wine and cocktails.
