Fore Abbey in County Westmeath

These ruins are situated in the north of the county, in the village of Fore, 5km from the town of Castlepollard. This beautiful site was founded by Saint Feichinn in the 7th century and housed hundreds of norman monks.

Visitors can also learn all about the “Seven Wonders of Fore”, a famous local theory on what the castle was built upon. These include, “The River that flows uphill”, “The tree that won’t burn” and the “Anchorite in a cell”. For seasoned hikers, the site can be best viewed at the top of the hill across the road from the ruin. This side of the site also has a modern graveyard and church. The village of Fore has a number of amenities that visitors can choose from, including; A visitor centre, Shop, pubs, and Tea/Coffee facilities.
