The story goes; it was founded by St Fechin of Fore in the 600s, who also founded a similar site in Westmeath!
Signs of its important ecclesiastical history can be seen through the likes of High Crosses and Holy Wells. After the Norman Conquest of Ireland in the 110s, the castle had been transformed into a medieval settlement. Although little is known about this settlement, we do know that it was considered a highly important administrative site. So, what are you waiting for?
